Insight of the Day: Consumers crave snacks instead of meals

The fifth annual state of snacking report from Mondelez International, Inc. highlights the growing trend of consumers preferring snacks over traditional meals. The report, developed in collaboration with the Harris Poll, gathered data from consumers across 12 countries to provide insights into snacking habits in 2023.

Key findings from the report include:

- 88% of consumers snack daily, with 60% snacking twice a day.

- 75% of surveyed consumers have "ritualized snack time" to enjoy a snack at a special moment or time of day.

- Younger consumers, including Gen Zers and millennials, are more likely to snack multiple times a day.

- Snacks are seen as fulfilling various physical and mental health needs, such as boosting energy, improving mood, and aligning with fitness goals.

- Portion control is important to consumers, with many preferring portion-controlled snacks and smaller indulgent portions over larger low-fat or low-sugar alternatives.

- Consumers are interested in snacks tailored to personal health and nutritional needs, as well as customizable options like adding preferred flavors or ingredients.

- Sustainability is a significant factor for consumers, with many prioritizing snacks with less plastic packaging, aligning with their values, and minimizing environmental impact through various methods.

- A growing number of consumers are choosing plant-based snacks, believing that they are better for the future of the planet.

Mondelez's chairman and CEO, Dirk Van de Put, emphasized that snacking remains an essential part of consumers' lives and that the company is committed to providing a variety of snack options to meet evolving consumer preferences.
